Haute-Gironde invites you to discover a Country which does not resemble any other: rich in history, in viticulture, in landscape…
From the grounds of Saint-André-de-Cubzac to those of Saint-Ciers-sur-Gironde which are bordering on Charentes, you will discover, in the gates of the largest estuary of Europe, on the Chemin de Saint Jacques de Compostelle, the marshes, the forests, the corniche with its cave dwellings, its islands, which were inhabited about fifty years ago, conceal a specific architectural and ecological heritage. Not to forget the archeological sites, the citadels built by Vauban and of course the vineyards in 1rst Côtes de Blaye, Côtes de Bourg and Bordeaux. The small roads which traverse them make it possible to discover hills, castles and Roman churches.
“This small country” is unique even in its gastronomy with its products of the Estuary: lampreys, eels, shads, elvers and the famous “shrimps”: Small white shrimps scented with anise and fennel as aperitif or as starter. The asparagus and raspberry of blayais are more and more recognised thanks to their gustative properties.

BLAYE
Sub-prefecture of Gironde, Blaye is a city of almost 5000 inhabitants. Historical city, earlier known as a strategic site, Vauban constructed there a citadel from 1685 to 1689 (classified today as a historic monument). The citadel had Fort Pâté on the island of the same name and Fort Médoc, on the other bank, the line of defense on Gironde to protect the city of Bordeaux
Nowadays, this place is the venue for various exhibitions and holds three major events: The wine market in March, the international jumping event and the music festival in July, the theater festival in August, the book trade fair in December.
For sports lovers many activities are offered and as for nature, the clean environment will provide beautiful discoveries .
Every Wednesday and Saturday, you can discover the traditional markets. Bustling, coloured even picturesque, they are places for meetings and discoveries.
Fairs are also held in Blaye. The most well known spring fair is the Sainte Catherine fair, on the last weekend of November which attracts an important local and regional population.
A small ferry sails several times a day from our bank (in Blaye) to the Médoc (in Lamarque) in 15 minutes, a short cruise which offers another view of our “small country”.
